Special Olympics
Locke High School is a "Title One" public school, located in the heart of South
Central Los Angeles (a neighborhood formerly known as Watts).Charity Unlike the affluent Special Olympics programs of the South Bay, Brentwood, Santa Clarita, Santa Charity & School Involvement

Barbara and the like, the Adapted Physical Education Program at Locke is known as one of the most "financially needy" in the nation. These students come from low income families, and many of them have no families at all. Some live in group homes, some in foster care; some are Wards of the court. The children are constantly in and out of county hospitals, and each year a few of these blessed children pass away.

Organized by former Bizzy Blondes' member Marie Lafayette, now a certified Adapted Physical Education Specialist with the L.A. Unified School District, the Special Olympics program for Locke High School was started approximately 10 years ago. Marie returned from a wonderful summer break and asked her students what they did on their vacation; they answered "nothing." They did not go to the beach, Disneyland, nor picnics in the park -- nothing.

At that time, Marie started the Locke High School Special Olympics program, committing to 1 or 2 events per year. The student-athletes rank in the bottom 5% in one or more areas of motor abilities, suffering from brain tumors, cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy and the like, with their main eligibility requirement to compete in Special Olympics being mental retardation. With Marie's hard work and dedication, the program has now expanded to Jordan and Southeast high schools, involving 30 kids and 15 field trips per year. The biggest struggle for this group is funding; it is almost non-existent. In addition to cash donations, "The Bizzy Blondes" help out in many ways; whether printing and providing t-shirts, buying new tennis shoes, or perhaps to pay for a bus and driver to transport the kids to various events.

The students love their involvement in Special Olympics; it is the highlight of their existence. And the athletes are welcome to stay with the program after they finish high school, for the rest of their lives.

Local Schools
"The Bizzy Blondes" team makes consistent contributions to many of the Westside public and charter schools. Other recipients of the teams generosity include Short Avenue School, Beethoven Elementary School, Westwood Charter School, New West Charter School, Palisades High School, A Kid's Place, Venice High School, Palms Middle School, and Coeur Coeur D’Alene Elementary School, just to name a few!
